Sizing up the waves
Being in a place of transition is one of the most daunting and often scary places to be. It could feel like standing on the beach, looking at the surf and wondering- should I go out and take on the waves?
Going out for a surf can be one of the best things in life. But even here placemaking and identity is key. Here are a few things to consider: are you ready to surf? Do you have the right gear? Do you have the right skills for the conditions and the weather? Are you actually more of a bodyboarder or are you in a place where you need to sit on the beach a bit longer to find your place and experience the ocean in a different way.
In my own life, especially navigating high school and university, my dreams were so big, but my timing wasn’t quite right. In hindsight, I would have handled transition much better if I had more compassion on myself, did the training on the sand first, tried easier boards first, before taking on the bigger waves, and getting rolled by the waves.
Taking the time and doing things step by step may seem like the long way around, but it is actually short way to surfing the waves of life.
